pg_locreate

Name

pg_locreate — Creates a large object identifier.

Synopsis

int pg_locreate(conn);
int conn: Connection ID

Returns

Object ID

Description

Creates an inversion large object on the specified database connection. The object is created with both read and write access. The object identifier can be passed to other PostgreSQL large-object handling functions.

In postgreSQL, records containing data cannot span 'data pages' which have a maximum size of 8192 bytes. Data - including binary data, that cannot be accomodated within a normal record can be stored as a large object. The large object interface to postgreSQL is a file based mechanism and has a similar set of functions to normal file access functions. In some respects, it is analogous to the fopen() group functions in PHP.

Example

Example 1044. Create a large object

if (isset($submit)) {
    $db = pg_connect("host=dbserver dbname=db user=dbuser password=dbpasswd") or die ("Unable to connect");
    pg_exec($db,"begin");
    $oid = pg_locreate($db);
    $fd = pg_loopen ($db, $oid, "w");
    pg_lowrite ($fd, $file);
    echo "Uploaded image with oid $oid";
    pg_loclose ($fd);
    pg_exec($db,"commit");
} else {
    echo "<form enctype=\"multipart/form-data\">";
    echo "<input type=file name=file>";
    echo "<input type=submit name=submit value=UPLOAD>";
    echo "</form>";
}
