web installation not spidering

Hi all, sorry to bother you with this kind of help but I'm definetly a begginer so please forgive me.
I've successfully installed php on my web domain, created db and tables and set all the info into th config file
but if i lunch dig this in admin/index.php a new page saying Spidering in progress... [Stop spider] comes up but even spidering a very simple web site as test after one hour nothing is still happening.
is there any way i can see if something is happening or not ?
