Searching different sub-sections of the website

We have a main site, within which there is a section which has department sites. What we are trying to do is the following:
- when in the main site (not any of the department pages) - search the whole site - this is working correctly.
- when in any of the department directories/pages, search JUST pages from that department - this is what we don't know how to do.

Any help with this would be hugely appreciated!
