ALLOW_SUBDIRECTORIES in 1.8.7

I noticed that in 1.8.8rc1 you can allow spidering of subdirectories. Unfortunately I don't have mysql 4.1, so I'm stuck with 1.8.7. Does anyone have a "fix" for this in 1.8.7 ?
